Millions of U.S. consumer will switch to Internet telephone VoIP services this year.  Cable TV services will end the year with almost 6 million voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) customers.

The move by telephone users to VoIP is putting the squeeze on traditional wired phone services companies. They are losing customers to this new technology What can they do to compete with VoIP?  They can continue to cut prices on the services they now provide.  Another option is the "if you can't beat them, join them"  tactic.

Verizon and SBC Communications (formerly AT&T) can vigorously promote there own Internet telephone VoIP services.  They have already started to move into that area of telephone service.

Like so many big companies the traditional telephone outfits are turning to the government to help them stay in business.  How can they do that?   Through stepped up lobbying, of course.

ViaTalk - Broadband Phone Service

VoIP's growth has caught the attention of the FCC, the agency that regulates interstate telephone service.  The FCC's job is to regulate and they have done that in the past by giving some special treatment to the new kid on the telecommunications block - VoIP.  Now it appears that VoIP has grown to be such a player in telephone service that the FCC will do something to help the wired companies stay in the game.

Telecom regulations were in place long before the appearance of VoIP and now many in the industry are saying that those rules should also apply to VoIP.  At first only those with some technical know how were able to take advantage of Internet telephone VoIP.  Now anyone can easily connect their telephone or special VoIP phone to their cable broadband link to make outgoing, or receive incoming calls.  Others users simply make calls through their computers with an inexpensive headset and microphone.

Google and Yahoo offer computer to computer calling.  EBay recently bought Skype, a company that was an early developer of VoIP calls through computers.

Consumers are jumping at the chance to use VoIP through the cable TV companies and those companies are making big gains in the acquisition of customers.  Comcast is the leading cable company.  They picked up 200,000 VoIP customers in their first year of offering the service.  They expect to hit the 4.2 million customer mark by the end of 2007.

The traditional companies find themselves between a rock and hard place.  To aggressively promote their own Internet telephone VoIP service will mean that they steal away paying users from their traditional service.

Will the FCC come to the rescue of the big phone companies with regulations that somehow limit the spread of VoIP?  Don't hang up until you see how this story ends.
